Successful completion of this course earns you a certificate used to apply for a Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL)
When you sign up for the CPL course, our instructor will contact you to confirm your class time and date, registration and answer any questions.
Not Just Guns CPL Safety and Training Class exceeds the minimum for Range live fire instruction, meets or exceeds requirements for class room studies.
How long is the class required to be?
St of MI requires: 5 hours Class Room & 3 hours Range Time, 8-hour Course.
Can I take class before age 21?
Course can be taken at age 18 and up. CPL Course Certificate is good for 5 years so you may apply as soon as you turn 21.
How much shooting experience do I need?
Students are expected to have basic pistol shooting skills to qualify for Certificate. Must be able to consistently hit a target with 10 shots, at a distance of 21’.
New Pistol Owners:
Many new pistol owners do not have the skills yet to complete a CPL Class. Please see our “New Pistol Owners Class” We get your shooting basic skills started right for CPL.
If I don’t have a pistol yet can I use a class gun?
Not Just Guns has new pistols available for use by students with purchase of ammunition for CPL Class range live fire portion.
State of Michigan Course requirements:
The pistol safety training course required under Michigan law must provide at least eight hours of instruction, including at least three hours of instruction on a firing range, firing at least 30 rounds of ammunition, and at least five hours of instruction in, but not limited to all of the following: The safe storage, use, and handling of a pistol, including, safe storage, to protect child safety. Ammunition knowledge and the fundamentals of pistol shooting. Pistol shooting positions. Firearms and the law, including civil liability issues, the use of deadly force. Avoiding criminal attack and controlling a violent confrontation. All laws that apply to carrying a concealed pistol in Michigan.
This class is a precursor to CPL class for those new to firearms. The perfect course For the new gun owner that wants a no live fire introduction into firearm ownership. We cover firearms safety, Firearms nomenclature, Cleaning & Maintenance, along with general function and operation.
**This is a great course for those who have not purchased but are seriously considering purchase**
Hybrid Handgun B.A.S.E (formerly Handgun1) is the next step after taking a CPL course. It will introduce students to pistol shooting fundamentals, body mechanics, proper reloading techniques and malfunction clearing. This class is 8 hours and is not an NRA course of instruction.
Class is held indoor at a non-live fire facility utilizing airsoft pistols where you can stay warm and skip having to buy real ammo. You will only need to bring safety glasses and a sturdy belt. Everything else is provided including pistol, mags and airsoft ammo/gas.
RANGE DRILLS INCLUDE:
- Shooting fundamentals / Accuracy Drills
- Body Mechanics of Shooting
- Speed / Tactical Reloads
- Proper draw stroke
- Different shooting positions
- Shooting while moving
WHAT TO BRING:
-Safety Glasses
-Good sturdy belt
Students must be a current United States citizen and meets one of the three following:
- Possess a current CPL license
- Is active duty Military or active full time Law Enforcement Officer
- The student meets the criteria for CPL in the State of Michigan and provides a letter of recommendation from their local Law Enforcement Agency attesting the student’s good standing as a law-abiding citizen.

EVERYDAY MEDICAL (EDM) is a hybrid medical course that combines advanced life saving trauma care with standard CPR and First Aid. It covers the contents and usage of your average Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) in depth and at the same time certifies you by the American Heart Associations (AHA) in CPR/First Aid/AED. EDM is a 1-day course held entirely in the classroom and includes lecture and hands on practice.
Students must be a current United States citizen and meets one of the three following:
- Possess a current CPL license
- Is an active duty Military or active full time Law Enforcement Officer
- The student meets the criteria for CPL in the State of Michigan and provides a letter of recommendation from their local Law Enforcement Agency attesting the student’s good standing as a law abiding citizen.
Hybrid LOW LIGHT/NO LIGHT HANDGUN Class is for the experienced shooter who already has a solid understanding of shooting fundamentals and is ready to take the next step in there education. It will introduce students to shooting in Low Light / No Light environments. This class is 8 hours and is not a NRA course of instruction.
Class is held indoor at a non-live fire facility utilizing airsoft pistols where you can stay warm and skip having to buy real ammo. You will only need to bring safety glasses ,a sturdy belt and a handheld flashlight. Everything else is provided including pistol, mags and airsoft ammo/gas.

UTM/Home Defense course is an 8-hour course focusing on all details related to defending your home. Class will consist of classroom/lecture and hands-on in a “non-lethal” indoor shoot-house. Class will also involve “force on force” or person on person scenarios.
The course is designed for anyone that owns a firearm for the purpose of defending their home and family and therefore we welcome all levels of shooting experience.
Course information covered:
-General home security guidelines
-Fortifying your house
-Developing home emergency plans
-Defending your home in an emergency
-Basic room clearing principals and movement using UTM guns and ammunition
What to bring:
-!!!PLEASE DO NOT BRING ANY LIVE FIREARMS OR AMMO INTO THE CLASSROOM, YOU WILL BE SEARCHED!!!
-All non-lethal firearms and ammunition will be provided
-Note pad and pen
-Safety glasses (hearing protection is not required)
-Extra layer or bulky outer garment if you wish to participate in “force on force” scenarios

Handgun B.A.S.E (formerly Handgun1) is the next step after taking a CPL course. It will introduce students to pistol shooting fundamentals, body mechanics, proper reloading techniques and malfunction clearing. This class is 9 hours and is not a NRA course of instruction.
You will need a minimum of 500 rounds for your pistol. You will need to bring safety glasses and hearing protection. Electronic hearing protection is preferred so you can hear range commands. This course will be held entirely on an outdoor range, rain or shine, so please bring weather appropriate gear.
